The Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission is committed to supporting and encouraging the commemoration of America’s independence and history.
Its main purpose is to support local commemorations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Local governments are asked to develop programs and projects in partnership with nonprofit cultural and community organizations, museums, libraries, historical societies, and schools.
The Alabama USA Commission has awarded 250 community grants of up to $2,500 to 215 Alabama municipalities and 35 county commissions. Community grants have been awarded to all 67 of Alabama’s counties.
An additional $50,000 in grants was awarded to 50 nonprofit organizations, including local chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), as well as museums and historical sites.
Natalie Steed, Executive Director of the Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission, stated:
“These grants represent our commitment to ensuring that America’s 250th anniversary is commemorated in every corner of Alabama. Together, these local efforts will build toward a truly statewide commemoration.”
Among those receiving grants include the cities of Prattville, Moody, Bon Air, Homewood, and Foley, as well as the Birmingham Chapter, SAR, and the Stephens Chapter, DAR.
Alabama’s statewide semiquincentennial celebration, Sweet Home 250: Where Freedom Feels Like Home, will take place at the American Village on July 3–4 from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. each day.
