Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 10. If you have forgotten, you will be quickly reminded when you enter a Walmart, a grocery store, or Walgreens not to forget to buy a card and some flowers. Always observed on the second Sunday in May, it is a cherished occasion in which to show your love, admiration, and respect for your mother.
We have to thank Anna Jarvis of Webster, West Virginia, who organized the first Mother’s Day observance on May 10, 1908, in Grafton, West Virginia. A worship service was held at Andrews’ Methodist Episcopal Church. The mothers were honored with carnations, her mother’s favorite flower.
It was Jarvis’ goal to honor all mothers. Following the death of her mother in 1905, Jarvis campaigned tirelessly for the establishment of a national holiday honoring mothers.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution establishing the second Sunday in May as a national holiday to honor mothers. Mother’s Day was officially designated.
A mother’s love, like a bouquet of fresh flowers, fills our hearts with joy.
Happy Mother’s Day.
