Alabama has a new revenue commissioner. Governor Kay Ivey has appointed Mary Martin Mitchell, general counsel at the Alabama Department of Revenue, as the new revenue commissioner. She will take office on May 1.
Mitchell stated, “I am honored to be appointed commissioner and grateful to Gov. Ivey for her trust placed in me to lead the Alabama Department of Revenue.”
Current Commissioner Vernon Barnett will retire from state service at the end of the month. Barnett has been a valuable member of the Ivey administration. “It has been the honor and the pleasure of a lifetime to have served the people of Alabama in the Ivey administration these past nine years as commissioner. I want to thank Gov. Ivey for placing her confidence in me and for her unwavering support and guidance,” said Commissioner Barnett.
A graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law, Mitchell has extensive experience in tax policy, legislation, administrative law and complex litigation.
