Despite the odds: Bryce’s story

April 2nd marked World Autism Awareness Day, yet we know many things are beyond the limits of one day. For the Jackson family, they’ve dealt with autism yearly, yet what seemed like a negative has birthed into a world of positivity and beautiful hopes towards an even brighter future.

During a journey that has been filled with faith, growth, and learning, Mykee and Monique Jackson (who coincidentally celebrated her birthday on April 2nd as well) faced what was thought to be a setback for their son Bryce. At the age of three, Bryce was diagnosed with autism, bringing into focus a world of uncertainty for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson. Yet over time, instead of focusing on what Bryce may not be able to do in life, they have begun focusing on things he can do.

Mrs. Monique shared, “Bryce has never allowed himself to be labeled. Being that he’s outgoing and engaging, his personality draws people in and even causes surprise due to him not displaying the ‘common’ traits many expect. As a high school senior, seeing him step outside of his comfort zone and joining the Track and Field team is another example of Bryce showing he’s capable of doing whatever he puts his mind to.”

We also learned from the Jacksons that no parent can ever be fully prepared for such a diagnosis for their child. Yet one must always be patient, involved, and an advocate in every way when it comes to such a challenging journey, because every child’s path is different—and different doesn’t mean less. Embracing differences helps a child’s growth.

Mr. Jackson shared, “Everything we’ve been through has been worth it—from the moments of uncertainty, every challenge and conversation has led us here today, which has also opened doors for us to help parents in similar situations to navigate, learn, and gain from our assistance and guidance. We love to help parents within these journeys because it confirms we’re living GOD’S purpose. Our motivation has always been Bryce, and there’s never an option to give up or slow down—we were going to keep pushing because we believed in him. As a father, I’ve learned to truly value the time I do have with him—from talking, laughing, or even sitting in silence. One of my favorite parts of the day is when I pick him up and we meet at the front of my truck and do our double fist bump. It’s simple, but it’s ours—and I never take it for granted.”

Seeing Bryce happy, confident, and comfortable being himself has brought Mr. and Mrs. Jackson their greatest joy—especially watching him build relationships, come out of his shell, and take on new challenges like joining the track team. It is something they don’t take lightly and has reminded them just how far he has come.

Bryce also spoke with enthusiasm, stating, “It feels good to be a senior, and I’m proud of myself for making it this far. Joining the track team is something new for me, and I’m excited about it. After high school, I want to keep growing, find something I enjoy doing, and continue trying new things that will help me be successful.”

Engaging, as his mother described, his presence exudes warmth and inspiration.

Mrs. Jackson concluded, “Seeing Bryce grow into who he is today proves that he is more than any label or expectation, and reminds us that his story was never meant to fit inside someone else’s definition. He’s writing his own story—and it’s a powerful one.”

We sincerely support our autistic communities, for they teach and motivate us all daily, and as Mykee and Monique have shown through Bryce, it takes a village and collective support to intentionally help and assist whenever and however.

The Jacksons also wish to thank teachers, staff, and support systems that have played a major role in Bryce’s development. They leave with this piece of wisdom: “Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small it may seem to others. And most importantly—believe in your child, even when others don’t fully understand.”

“Let’s Love and Support Each and Everyone Fully.”
