A true gentleman policeman, Lt. Warren Hughes of the Bessemer Police Department was recently named the 2026 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
The Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce presented the award at the 35th annual Bessemer Business Awards and First Responders Gala, held at the Bessemer Civic Center.
Hughes said, “I was surprised and honored to be named the 2026 law enforcement officer of the year. I thank Chief Carmichael and Capt. Reese for nominating me and for their support.”
Many consider Hughes the face of the Bessemer Police Department. This well-respected man represents the department in a professional manner at all public functions.
Originally from Fultondale, he joined the department in 2006 as a police officer. He has worked as a patrolman, a motor scout, a sergeant over the patrol division and the corrections division, and in special operations.
Always happy and smiling, Hughes now oversees special operations, narcotics investigations and administrative duties as a lieutenant. He is also a member of the Special Response Team, which was established to address situations outside normal operations.
He and his wife of 14 years, Pennie Hughes, have two children.
A good, decent man, Hughes is indeed an asset to the department and the city.
