Kelvin Eades takes the oath as the Bessemer City Council’s District 5 member
Members of the Bessemer Board of Education and the Bessemer City Council were sworn in last week.
The school board members who took the oath included Tasha Wynn-Scott, Lee Jones, Elaine Holifield, Omar Chapman and Remeka Little. Councilman Chester Porter, an incumbent, and Kelvin Eades, new to the council, took the oath at the same ceremony.
“Serving as an official school board member is both an honor and a tremendous responsibility,” Chapman said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve my community and advocate for our students, families, and educators. I’m looking forward to the work ahead and committed to helping to improve our school system. There’s a lot to do, but I’m ready to get to work.”
Chapman has been director of the Bessemer Public Library for the last several years.
Eades took the oath as the new District 5 councilman.
“Being sworn in as the District 5 councilman is the honor of my life,” Eades said. “Today isn’t about me, it’s about the neighbors who trusted me with their voice. Bessemer was built by hardworking people, and that spirit is still alive on every street in this district. I am looking forward to unifying our city and solving the hard problems, where our citizens will feel safe, have cleaner neighborhoods, and see economic growth.”
Omar Chapman takes the oath as a member of the Bessemer Board of Education.
Elaine Holifield, newly elected to the Bessemer Board of Education, and her daughter Bianca share a light moment at the swearing-in.
