It was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from the autoimmune disease ITP following an eight-week hospitalization.
As a recognition program, all licensed registered nurses are eligible for the DAISY Award.

The award began at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance at the University of Washington Medical Center.
