Council appoints new city clerk at Tuesday night meeting

Greensboro City Council voted to appoint a new city clerk on Tuesday night.

Longtime City Clerk Lorrie Cook, who said last year that she intended to retire from the position, had continued to serve on an interim basis since the beginning of 2026.

Councilmember Curtis made a motion to appoint Shereka Walker to the position of city clerk. Councilmember Lewis seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.

The council also acted to reappoint Kimberly Evans to her position on the Greensboro Recreation Board during their June 9 meeting.

Evans’ service appointment ended on March 31 of this year, and Susie Harris, Chairman of the Recreation Board, requested her reappointment through the Council.

Curtis made a motion to reappoint Evans to her board position. Councilmember Bragg seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried.

Lewis made a motion to grant a request from Harris to hold a joint workshop with the Council and the Parks and Recreation Board. Curtis seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried. The workshop will be held on June 16 at 6:30 PM.

Curtis made a motion to purchase a 2011 Kubota B2360 mower from Irby Tractors. There is a $500 down payment and the cost is $7,480. The mower will be used to maintain the city’s parks. Councilmember Kyser seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried.

Councilmember Shepherd made a motion to pay $27,281 to Bancorp for the yearly lease on four Dodge Chargers currently in use by the Greensboro Police Department. Bragg seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried.

Curtis made a motion to pay Cornerstone Civil Contractors, LLC. $42,491.60 for a drainage and street improvement project. Lewis seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried.

Curtis made a motion to pay 4MC Outfitters LLC. $4,750 upfront for their work project at Smith Park. The upfront payment constitutes half of the company’s total fee of $9,500. Lewis seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried. 4MC will begin their Smith Park project on June 29 and expect to be done on July 1.

Curtis made a motion to close portions of Beacon Street and Market Street on June 19 from 8 AM to 8 PM for a Juneteenth celebration. Lewis seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried.

A representative from the Hale County Farmers Market reminded those in attendance that the market is open and offering a meal every Thursday evening from 4–6 PM at their South Street location until July 30.
