ALEA offering Kayaking 101 classes to launch National Safe Boating Week

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are partnering with paddlesports leaders to offer low-cost beginner kayaking classes on Saturday, May 16, at Montgomery Whitewater.

The event marks the first year for Kayaking 101 in Alabama. The multi-state initiative is in its fifth year and has helped hundreds of beginners across the Southeast learn to paddle safely. Last year, 330 paddlers across five states received training. This year, classes are being offered at more than 40 locations across eight states.

Classes will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, at Montgomery Whitewater, 1100 Maxwell Blvd., Montgomery. Each session costs $15 per person, which includes kayak rental and all necessary gear — training that typically costs between $75 and $150. Sessions are limited to 15 participants each.

All instructors are Alabama volunteers certified by the American Canoe Association. ALEA and ADCNR officers will be on site to reinforce paddlecraft safety and awareness.

Space is limited. Registration is open now at the Kayaking 101 website. A free online course is also available through ACA Paddlesports, but organizers strongly encourage in-person instruction.

Those interested in paddling can also find rental equipment and paddling access at select Alabama State Parks. Visit alapark.com for locations.
