Zion Chapel Methodist awarded $54,937 preservation grant

Zion Chapel Methodist Church in Marion has been awarded a $54,937.50 historic preservation grant through the Alabama Historical Commission’s Historic Sites Grant Program, funded by the state Legislature.

Sen. Robert Stewart announced the award, noting that the church, known locally as Zion Church, holds an important place in the history of the Voting Rights Movement. The 1965 Marion movement and the events surrounding the death of Jimmie Lee Jackson helped set the stage for the Selma to Montgomery March, making Perry County an essential part of the story of American democracy.

“I’m proud to see this investment help preserve a sacred landmark,” Stewart said, adding that the funding helps ensure the history is carried forward for generations to come.
