Council meeting postponed after death of Mayor’s father, Bennie Hinton, age 73

The Marion City Council has postponed its Tuesday, Sept. 8, meeting after the death Saturday, Sept. 5, of Bennie C. Hinton Sr., 73, the father of Mayor Dexter Hinton, the city announced Sunday.

The council’s next regular meeting is Monday, Sept. 21.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. at Berean Baptist Church in Marion, with Melvin Miller Funeral Service directing.

Hinton served four years on the council as the District 4 councilman and served on the Berean Head Start board, the city said in a statement of condolence. He was a master upholsterer and craftsman for many years.

“We honor his life, his service, and the legacy he leaves behind,” said the city’s post, thanking residents for their patience as the family mourns.
