EJI taking applications for $415-a-month grocery assistance

The Equal Justice Initiative is taking applications for its Anti-Hunger Program, which provides Alabama households facing food insecurity with a prepaid card loaded with $415 a month for up to six consecutive months to buy groceries and other essentials such as diapers, according to a notice shared by Project GRACE Central Alabama. Sign-ups opened Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The Montgomery-based nonprofit launched the program in 2022 with a focus on the Black Belt and has since served more than 6,000 families in nearly every Alabama county, according to EJI. Priority goes to families with children.

Demand is heavy: the organization says it receives at least 1,000 applications a month and, because of limited funding, can approve only about 10 to 20 percent.

Information about the program is at eji.org, or call EJI at (334) 269-1803.
