Newbern in line for $747,000 for wastewater project

The town of Newbern would receive $746,868 for improvements to its wastewater collection system under federal appropriations bills moving through Congress, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell announced.

The money for Newbern is part of nearly $7 million Sewell said she secured for nine community projects across Alabama’s 7th Congressional District, which includes Hale County. She announced the funding June 18, after the projects were included in Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations bills approved by the House Appropriations Committee.

The Newbern project, funded through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, is intended to address longstanding sanitation challenges in the town and to improve public health and environmental conditions, according to Sewell’s office.

The appropriations bills still must be passed by the full House and signed into law before the funding takes effect. Sewell said she would continue working to see the projects through Congress.
