Council Porter and Resource panel members
This past week Bessemer councilman Chester Porter (District 2) and councilwoman Sarah Person (District 3) held a Community Resource Event.
The event is set to keep community members and Bessemer residents informed and connected within current and present agendas, activities and more throughout the city. Designed to provide valuable information for all concerned, the meeting started with prayer, followed by participant engagement with icebreaker activities that resulted in surprised prize winnings for those present.
Representatives from the Bessemer Fire Department, Bessemer Police Department, Bessemer City Hall and others provided information regarding scam awareness, mental health issues, and other things such as free fire alarms that are provided by our very own Fire Departments.
One attendee asked the question, “How can we alleviate the violence within our communities?” and Bessemer Police Sergeant Murray gave an important answer, stating, “With the negative stigma that surrounds Bessemer, resident help and engagement can be the cure to many crimes in our city. Simply put, if you see something, say something, and we really want our youth to know this, also.”
Councilman Porter also stated, “We always want our communities to know that we’d like to stress the importance of keeping our districts clean. The upkeep of our neighborhoods is a viable tactic we must all begin to become engaged with.”
To stay aware, attend city council meetings the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. and every second and third city meetings at 9 a.m.
Let’s engage and get involved to better our communities and help those brave enough to begin stepping towards a brighter tomorrow for all.
