This year’s Bessemer municipal election will be distinctive because it parallels America’s 250th anniversary and the Spirit of America.
The municipal election for the office of mayor of Bessemer is now a crowded field.
At the close of business on Tuesday, June 23, the deadline for those interested in running for municipal office in Bessemer, four people had qualified for the office of mayor including the incumbent.
Incumbent Mayor Kenneth E. Gulley is facing opposition from three people. They are Louise Alexander, 2508 11th Avenue, North; Darral Lerone Bethel, 741 Pine Tree Circle; and Brenita Lewis, 486 Carriage Hills Drive.
There are 15 candidates for the seven Bessemer City Council seats.
The candidates for City Council, District 1 are incumbent Jarvis Collier, 709 4th Avenue, North, and Michael Knight, 1050 Barclay Drive.
Incumbent City Councilman Chester W. Porter, District 2, is unopposed.
In the City Council, District 3 race, incumbent Councilwoman Sarah B. Person, 3027 Arlington Avenue, faces opposition from Cynthia Donald, 2317 Dartmouth Avenue.
The candidates for City Council, District 4 are incumbent Councilwoman Donna Thigpen, 6033 Pleasant Hill Road and Rhonda Brantley, 2985 Browning Road.
In the City Council, District 5 election, incumbent Councilman Teco Stephens, 622 Somerset Blvd. faces opposition from Kelvin Eades, 723 Rosemary Lane.
The City Council, District 6 election features incumbent Councilwoman Carla Jackson, 165 Royal Coach Circle against Tonia Miller, 436 Surrey Circle, Lakia Reeves, 1819 Short 13th Street, and Valerie M. Williams, 521 Westchester Drive.
The candidates for City Council, District 7 are incumbent Councilman Cleo King, 505 Gladys Street, Silas Baldwin, 708 Clarendon Avenue and Howard Acoff, Jr., 1730 Clarendon Avenue.
