Fall has always been a good time for children to go on outdoor educational field trips. For one thing, the weather is a little more tolerable.
Camp Fletcher’s outdoor educational field trips are now underway. They begin in September and run through November.
Camp Fletcher, a 300-acre woodland preserve, is located at 5150 Fletcher Road in Bessemer. It is operated by BridgeWays, a nonprofit youth development organization that acquired the property in 2004.
The outdoor education program offers field trips with interactive, hands-on lessons in environmental science, earth science and social science.
Each field trip is led by trained staff who provide meaningful learning opportunities outside the walls of the classroom.
“Our field trips offer children, teachers and parents an opportunity to participate in experiential learning about the outdoors in its natural setting,” said McKenna Erwin, director of camp programs.
The curriculum is designed around the native trees, plants, wildlife, geography and rich history of the property. All lessons meet state academic standards set by the Alabama State Department of Education.

General camp programming is also offered, including summer day camp, afterschool camp and overnight campout programs.
Camp Fletcher was founded in 1926 by Pauline Bray Fletcher, the first African-American registered nurse in Alabama.
