Remeka Little, humbled and grateful to the voters who put her on the Bessemer Board of Education, is ready to serve the school system she is a product of.
Little won the District 2 seat over incumbent Terry E. Dawson, 395 votes to 353, in the Aug. 25 municipal election, according to the official results certified by the City Council. She takes office the first Monday in November.
“These schools helped shape my life, and now I have an opportunity to give back,” Little said. “I understand this victory comes with a responsibility to listen, prepare and work diligently for our educators, students and families.”
Her priorities range from student achievement and accountability to stronger communication between the board and the community, and she wants families to feel heard on the matters that affect their children. “I believe asking questions and expecting clear answers are essential parts of meaningful collaboration,” she said.
Little thanks the voters for believing in her and for the time, encouragement, prayers and hard work they put into her campaign. She spent 14 years in the classroom and 29 years in education in all, and recently retired. She says students, families and colleagues taught her what it takes to make schools successful.
“Serving on the school board gives me another opportunity to advocate for children’s needs while supporting the educators and families who help them succeed,” she said. “I want every student to know that their voice matters and that their future is worth investing in.”
