Bessemer awards contract for new fire station

When was the last time a new fire station was built in Bessemer?

Recently, the Bessemer City Council approved awarding a contract for the construction of a new fire station.

Fire Station #2 Annex will be located on the corner of 19th Street and Carolina Avenue.

Five bids were received for the project. The lowest responsible bid received was from Coston General Contractors, Inc.

A resolution awarding the contract to Coston General Contractors in the amount of $3,287,718.00 was approved at a regularly scheduled meeting, duly assembled of the Bessemer City Council.

Groundbreaking and construction will soon start on the 8,250 sq. ft. building.

The project will be completed by the summer of 2027.

Fire Chief Kendric Hughley said, “We are excited about the new station and being able to better serve the citizens of Bessemer.”

William Blackstock Architects designed the building that will house the new ladder truck and the transport unit.

Councilwoman Donna Thigpen made a motion to approve the resolution. Councilwoman Sarah Bell Person seconded the motion.

The motion was approved.
