Bessemer adopts video and audio surveillance policy

The Bessemer City Council understands its responsibility in providing a safe and secure workplace for municipal employees, elected officials, visitors and the public.

Also, the city of Bessemer owns and operates numerous public facilities, vehicles, equipment and infrastructure requiring protection from theft, vandalism, violence, misconduct and unauthorized access.

The use of video and audio surveillance systems serves a valid public purpose by enhancing public safety, protecting public property, assisting in investigations, improving efficiency, reducing liability and preserving evidence.

However, the city of Bessemer did not have in place a policy to govern the use of surveillance systems within the municipality to protect the staff and the public.

The Bessemer Police Department will be exempt from the policy due to the confidential nature of its investigative processes and related materials.

The City Council is in agreement concerning the multiple benefits of surveillance systems and a necessary video and audio surveillance policy.

Councilwoman Sarah Bell Person made a motion to approve the video and audio surveillance policy. Councilwoman Carla Jackson seconded the motion. The motion carried.
