Tracy McCall joined the Bessemer Police Department in October of 2025 as the administrative assistant to Bessemer Police Chief Gary Carmichael. A former Birmingham Police officer and recruiter, she worked as a bicycle officer, Police Academy instructor and a liaison officer for the Birmingham Municipal Court for over 20 years.
A member of Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Birmingham, Tracy is indeed an asset to the Bessemer Police Department. Personable and well-spoken, she has worked as a trainer for the military and in law enforcement for decades. Tracy, who loves color, is an ideal mentor to those in need of guidance. Her cup runneth over with compassion and love for her fellowman. In her position, her goal is to contribute to making the city better.
What are your duties as an administrative assistant?
Tracy: First and foremost, making sure the police chief stays on his schedule. I have become his timekeeper. I focus on the day-to-day operation, coordinating events and representing the chief in a professional capacity.
What has been a highlight of your job?
Tracy: I receive such joy each morning as I greet all my co-workers. I really enjoy talking with the employees and getting to know them.
What is a trainer?
Tracy: In my profession, a trainer is a person who is responsible for development, education, cultural diversity and coaching individuals with a goal to understanding the mission.
Speak to your military service?
Tracy: Since July 2000, I served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. While in the reserve, I worked as a Yeoman at Oberammergau, Germany and years later as a logistic specialist with the NATO Unit, aviation supply, at Mayport Naval Station and at the Army Depot in Anniston. I also served as an education service officer and a commander trainer. I retired from military service in 2021.
What is your favorite meal?
Tracy: I love seafood especially seafood gumbo with boiled corn, turnip greens, fruit salad, and for dessert a slice of lemon icebox pie.
Do you have a favorite movie?
Tracy: Indeed. The 1995 American military comedy Major Payne starring Damon Wayans.
Tell me about your family?
Tracy: I am the oldest of three siblings of the late Brenda and Namon Johnson, Sr. I was married for 17 years to the late Michael McCall, and we had a blended family, four girls and three boys.
