Vernice “Nicese” Smith, 54, of Greensboro, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, June 24, surrounded by her loving parents, sister, brothers, nieces, and other cherished family members.

She was born on November 17, 1971, to Eddie B. Smith and Ruby Love Williams Smith of Greensboro. Nicese accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Hickory Stand A.M.E. Zion Church in Greensboro. She graduated from Greensboro High School West in 1992 and later pursued higher education in Birmingham.

On July 3, 1993, she was united in holy matrimony to Elwin Rainer Sr. Through this union, she lovingly embraced and helped raise Elwin (Crystal) Rainer II, Chavon (Tone) Rainer Sanford, and Aaron L. Rainer as her own.

Following their marriage, Nicese and Elwin relocated to Sacramento, Calif. She later moved to Portland, Ore., where she lived with her uncle, Johnny B., and aunt, Dorothy Williams. During her career, she dedicated more than 20 years of service to Pacific Power, eventually transferring to Las Vegas, Nev., where she continued her professional journey.

A public viewing was held Wednesday, July 1, from noon to 4 p.m. at Agnew Funeral Home, 1110 Baptist Hill.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at New Pentecostal Holiness Church, 708 Hobson Street, with Rev. Smith officiating. A repast will follow at the A&J Multi-Purpose Center, 14146 Alabama Highway 25.
