Police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place late Sunday night in the parking lot of the Amazon warehouse in Bessemer.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the victim as Tyler Neil Alexander. Alexander was a 19-year-old Amazon employee who lived in Birmingham.
“We’re deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless act of violence and are focused on supporting our employees during this time,” said Amazon spokesman Sam Stephenson.
We’re working with the Bessemer Police Department in their active investigation.”
Work at the warehouse was discontinued after the shooting, and employees were sent home with pay. Monday’s day shift was also canceled, and counseling will be offered for employees upon their return.
The shooting happened at 10:40 PM Sunday night outside the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Powder Plant Road. Witnesses claimed to have heard multiple shots that they described as automatic gunfire.
Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:03 PM.
Detective Justin Burmeister said no arrests have been made. It is not clear at this time if the suspect or suspects were also employees, he said.
Alexander’s murder is Bessemer’s first homicide of 2026.
“I am deeply saddened by the gun violence that occurred in our community last night,” Bessemer City Councilmember Cleo King said in a statement Monday.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragic incident.”
“In this difficult moment, we lift up those who are grieving and those working toward healing,” King said.
“I thank our first responders and law enforcement officers for their swift and courageous response.”
King said he is committed to working with community leaders, faith organizations, and residents to address the root causes of violence and to pursue solutions that promote safety, healing, and peace throughout the city.
