Students in the CLIMB program traded their classroom at Hale County Hospital for a college campus earlier this month, spending a day at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The group spent part of the day in an advanced microbiology lab, where students talked with a professor and took part in hands-on activities. They also heard presentations on the UAB application process and scholarship opportunities.
In the anatomy lab, students handled human bones and organs, including brains and hearts.
Students ate in the student center and toured campus spaces during the visit.
CLIMB, which stands for Community Leaders in Medicine and Beyond, works with high school students on leadership, service and healthcare through hands-on experiences.
Organizers said the fall term will involve projects shaped by local needs, community service work, public speaking and ACT preparation.
