Bessemer City Councilwoman Donna Thigpen cares deeply about her district and is committed to serving the good people of District 4. First elected to the Bessemer City Council in 2010, she is seeking re-election.
Donna has been the broker/partner with Five Star Real Estate, LLC in McCalla since 2014. Pleasant and friendly with an outgoing personality, she has been a real estate agent for 20 years.
Donna has been a member of Canaan Baptist Church on Morgan Road for over 40 years, and she sings in the choir and is a member of the Branches Class.
A resident of Greenwood since 1979, Donna and her husband, Bill, moved to Greenwood to rear their daughter, Allison, in the community.
A strong woman, she is accessible, makes informed decisions based on what is in the best interest of the community and the long-term interests of the city, asks questions and most importantly, listens to her residents.
Donna voted no for the proposed data center because she believed it was not the right project for that location or the right time for the community.
She has enjoyed hosting a Fall Festival for the community in the field next to her home for several years. Her experienced leadership has contributed to the growth and improvement of the district.
Donna lost Bill in March of this year. She still wants to serve her district. That is when she decided to seek re-election.
What attracted you to public office?
Donna: I was encouraged by Commissioner Jimmie Stephens of Morgan Road to run for the open seat in 2010.
What has been most rewarding about serving?
Donna: Meeting and hearing from my constituents. Also, talking to the people and listening to their concerns as well as their love for their neighborhoods and community.
How has District 4 changed?
Donna: Today, District 4 is cleaner, and city services have greatly improved. The growth in the district has been tremendous due to new businesses and the expansion of old businesses.
What are your goals for the next term?
Donna: Bessemer is at an important point in its future. We have opportunities for growth and investment that require thoughtful leadership and sound decision making. Growth must be responsible, transparent and benefits all of our residents.
What gives you joy?
Donna: My family and in particular, my five-year-old granddaughter Sawyer Boyd.
What is your favorite meal?
Donna: I love Southern cooking, especially fried chicken, creamed potatoes, black eyed peas, fried okra, corn on the cob, deviled eggs, cornbread and for dessert a slice of strawberry pie.
What is most important to your constituents?
Donna: First and foremost, quality of life and safe neighborhoods, then clean roads and streets and regular trash and garbage pickup.
Do you have a favorite quote?
Donna: I used to tell my daughter all the time, “If you think you can or think you cannot, you’re probably right.”
