Retired Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Captain Jacob “JJ” Reach has announced his candidacy for sheriff of Jefferson County as the Republican candidate. The general election will be held on November 3, 2026.
A resident of McCalla, Reach is a native of Midfield. His grandfather, J.W. Morris, served as Midfield Chief of Police for 34 years. Reach joined the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department in 1994 and retired in 2024 as a captain. He currently serves as an investigator with the Calera Police Department.
With more than 30 years of law enforcement experience serving Jefferson County, Reach said he is focused on safe schools and safe communities. A member of Church of the Highlands, Southwest Campus, he also said he will work to improve pay for law enforcement officers and is committed to bringing integrity back to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
A political newcomer, how did you come to seek political office?
Jacob: I was approached by the Jefferson County Republican Party to run for the office. I was humbled by this call to serve.
Why do you want to be sheriff?
Jacob: Most importantly, to bring integrity back to the sheriff’s office. I also want the men and women who wear the badge to freely do their jobs without fear of retaliation and intimidation.
What are the duties of the Jefferson County Sheriff?
Jacob: The sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of Jefferson County and, as such, is responsible for serving court papers, evictions, maintaining safety and security of the Jefferson County jails, sex offender registration and notification services, and felony warrants.
What is your educational background?
Jacob: I earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Columbia Southern University in Gulf Shores.
Tell me about your family.
Jacob: I was born in 1971, the youngest of two children of the late Jaysena and Harold Reach. I have been married for seven years to Heather Reach, and we have a blended family of six children and two grandchildren.
Do you have time for hobbies?
Jacob: Yes, sir. I have enjoyed coaching baseball for 25 years. I also enjoy hunting and fishing.
What is your favorite meal?
Jacob: I enjoy a filet, baked potato, baked beans, corn on the cob, and for dessert a slice of buttermilk pie.
