Dog shot, killed during Bessemer PD traffic stop

The Bessemer Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting involving an officer and a dog after a traffic stop on June 21 at approximately 10:22 p.m. near 22nd Street South and Arlington Avenue in Bessemer, Alabama.

According to police, an officer stopped a vehicle after it ran a stop sign. While the officer was speaking with the driver, a large dog exited the vehicle through an open rear window and moved toward the officer. The officer stated that the dog began snapping at his legs as he attempted to move away. The officer then fired his service weapon, killing the dog.

A witness at the scene confirmed that the dog exited the vehicle and approached the officer. Investigators recovered three shell casings. No officers or other individuals were injured during the incident.

Police said that, based on preliminary statements, the officer perceived an immediate threat as the dog advanced. However, the department emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and will include review of witness accounts, physical evidence, officer actions, and any available video footage.

In a statement, Bessemer police acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident, saying they understand the grief experienced by the pet’s owner. The officer involved remains on regular duty while the investigation continues.
