Lawson State Community College will host Recovery Is Here 2026: The Truth About Recovery at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, in the Academic Success Center Auditorium on its Birmingham campus, 3060 Wilson Road SW.
The event is one of a statewide series held by Alabama’s colleges and recovery organizations during National Recovery Month to challenge common misconceptions about addiction and recovery.
Admission is free, and students, faculty, staff and the public are welcome.
“As an institution dedicated to student success and community engagement, Lawson State is proud to participate in Recovery Is Here,” said Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony, the college’s president. “We are bringing together experts, advocates and individuals who can help replace misconceptions with understanding and ensure that more people understand recovery truly is possible.”
The 90-minute program includes Treatment Options: Voices from the Field, with professionals representing different treatment approaches and levels of care; Recovery Pathways, a multimedia presentation on several paths to recovery; a panel discussion with audience questions; and a tabling period afterward where attendees can meet the speakers and partner organizations.
This year’s events across the state focus on one question: what does recovery actually look like?
Dr. Cyrus Vance, the college’s dean of students, said hosting the event on campus continues Lawson State’s commitment to student wellbeing and its role as a resource for the Birmingham area.
“In higher education, we understand that recovery is an issue that touches lives across every demographic and socioeconomic background,” he said. “Education can play an important role in breaking down barriers, encouraging conversations, reducing stigma and helping people connect with support when they need it most.”
Lawson State has campuses in Bessemer and Birmingham and serves more than 3,500 students a year.
