Bessemer firefighter Joseph Kade Spraggins epitomizes the values honored by the Bessemer Fire Department.
He is committed to fire service and the citizens of Bessemer.
Spraggins was recently honored as the Firefighter of the Year at the 35th Annual Bessemer Business Awards First Responders Gala. The event was held at the Bessemer Civic Center.
The A Shift Station 1 firefighter was nominated by Lt. Tom Dehmer with the Bessemer Fire Department.
Spraggins said, “I am honored to receive this award. First, I would like to thank God for blessing me, secondly, my wife for always supporting me, next, Lt. Dehmer for recognizing my passion for my craft and lastly, Engine 1, ‘The Workhorse,’ for being the best truck in the city.”
A compassionate, professional man, his willingness to assist others is evident in his daily work.
In the nomination it was stated that “He represents the very best of our department.”
Along with his good mentoring skills for both new recruits and seasoned firefighters, Spraggins’ patience, humility and encouragement contribute to the development of his co-workers.
An employee of the department for nearly four years, he takes pride in the fire department.
The atmosphere and morale at Station 1 are better because of his flags and inspirational banners.
Today, the department is well organized and stronger.
Spraggins’ determination, work ethic and dedication during emergencies are inspiring.
