To minimize the threat to life and property due to flooding, the Bessemer City Council agrees that it is essential to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations.
Participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and requires the adoption and enforcement of floodplain management regulations. The COB Floodplain Development regulations must meet or exceed the minimum standards established by federal law and regulations.
Bessemer’s 2026 Floodplain Development Ordinance has been prepared to meet the requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program and applicable Alabama law.
The ordinance promotes public health, safety and general welfare for the citizens of the city of Bessemer.
The city council has determined that the proposed ordinance is in the best interest of the city of Bessemer.
The 2026 Floodplain Development Ordinance was officially adopted by the city council on the 2nd day of June 2026.
