“From the grownups to the kids, this day is a homecoming for our baseball league. We’re here to show our appreciation to the parents and all those who have been willing to make this season spectacular,” Kenneth E. Gulley Rec Center Athletic Coordinator Tim Johnson recently told us.
As seasons change and the love of sports grows with anticipation for the next season, Bessemer and Jefferson County athletic departments are making sure the kids are enjoying themselves beyond the mound.
For this season’s homecoming, the Bessemer Fire Department escorted our young sportsmen through a communal parade that engaged Bessemer residents and parents throughout.
Sponsored by the Law Enforcement Athletic Partnership (L.E.A.P. Program), the teams even get the chance to enjoy Birmingham Barons home games as a plus for being a part of these athletic organizations.

Firemen Darius Davis and Ken Thomas spoke with us during the day.
Mr. Davis told us, “I think days such as these are always good for the community. Everyone comes together and just being a part of the parade meant a lot, and it’s good for our kids to see such and participate in the things they love, such as sports.”
Fireman Thomas also spoke, saying, “I think it’s great for us to be a part of such community activities as much as possible. We’re glad to help out and be a part of such a great day.”
We applaud the efforts of the Kenneth E. Gulley Rec Center staff, Mr. Tim Johnson, L.E.A.P., and Bessemer’s very own Fire Department personnel for seeing to it our parents and kids are shown they are appreciated beyond the mound.
