A chat with Uncle Sam, Symbol of America, Happy 250th Anniversary

God bless America. Uncle Sam is an endearing symbol of American culture and our patriotic fervor. None more so than today, as we celebrate America’s 250th year of independence.

A patriotic American, Uncle Sam became a symbol of America in the early 19th century. During the War of 1812, Uncle Sam’s character was first introduced to the American public. He was named after a Troy, New York, businessman, Samuel Wilson, who provided rations to the soldiers during the War of 1812.

Today, our image of Uncle Sam remains based on the 1917 World War I recruitment poster by James Montgomery Flagg. His chest swells as he tells young people the freedoms we have today are due to our patriot ancestors who fought and died for our country.

Uncle Sam will be visiting with veterans from all branches of the military during the 4th of July holiday.

God bless America, and Happy 250th anniversary.
