A chat with Rev. Silas Baldwin, funeral home director, Faith Memorial Chapel

Rev. Silas Baldwin has been a funeral home director for 15 years. He started in the business in 2009 at Faith Memorial Chapel, 600 9th Avenue North in Bessemer.

A lifelong resident of the Marvel City, Silas is a multifaceted professional who is a member of the Bessemer Historic Society. A 2016 graduate of Miles College, he is active in community service projects.

With an outgoing personality, Silas has been an ordained Missionary Baptist minister since 2013. He is a servant-leader whose life reflects a deep and consistent commitment to uplifting and improving the community.

In his profession, his heart for service affords him the opportunity to lead, comfort, and support those who are bereaved. A good, solid, decent man, Silas’ work provides peace and reassurance. He also cares deeply about people, policy, and making sure voices are heard — especially when it comes to issues that directly affect families and underserved communities. Silas is passionate not only about people and leadership, but also about his community and the city.

What attracted you to the funeral home industry?

Silas: As a funeral home director, I have the opportunity to serve people who are grieving and experiencing difficult times. Compassion, dignity, and professionalism matter greatly when people are in need of guidance.

What do you find rewarding as a funeral home director?

Silas: Every service is unique, and knowing that I played a role in creating a meaningful experience of remembrance and closure is greatly rewarding. A funeral service goes beyond just arrangements. It encompasses ministry, service, and being available to those who mourn.

What is the average cost of a funeral today?

Silas: The national median cost of an adult funeral with viewing and burial is approximately $8,300 to $9,995.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Silas: My favorite verse is Jeremiah 1:5:

“Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

What is your educational background?

Silas: I am a 2016 graduate of Miles College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, a certified instructor with the Sunday School Publishing Board, and I earned my JD degree from Miles Law School in 2024.

Have you ever been interested in politics?

Silas: Yes, sir. I have definitely thought about running for public office as far back as 2018. I believe good leadership is about listening to people, building trust, and being willing to serve rather than simply hold a title.

Do you have a favorite meal?

Silas: My favorite meal is oxtails or beef neck bones with fried corn and candied yams. For dessert, peach cobbler, banana pudding, or lemon pie.
