Blue Shadows, the well-known bed and breakfast and farm property on Alabama Highway 14 west of Greensboro, has been listed for sale for the first time since the home was built in 1941.
The property includes approximately 74 acres of land, featuring large pecan trees, a formal garden, a nature trail, a barn, and a 14-acre fishing lake. It was established as a bed and breakfast in 1988 by the late Thaddeus May, a retired TWA airline pilot, and his wife Janet May. Thad May’s parents originally built the home.
Blue Shadows gained wider recognition when travel writer Paul Theroux used it as his base during repeated visits to Greensboro for his 2015 book “Deep South: Four Seasons on Back Roads.” Theroux, accompanied by photographer Steve McCurry, wrote extensively about Greensboro and Hale County. Through Janet May, he was introduced to local historian Randall Curb and, eventually, to the late short story writer Mary Ward Brown.
The family recently announced the listing on social media, sharing that the property “is ready for its next chapter” after holding “generations of memories, laughter, and love.”
