The Alabama Historical Commission is pleased to announce the 2025 Places in Peril list.
Places in Peril is a program managed by the AHC that highlights significant historic properties across Alabama that are at risk of being lost. Since 1994, the AHC and partners have collaborated to promote the program that calls public attention to Alabama’s threatened historical and archaeological sites and to bring awareness to significant places that suffer from neglect, lack of financial support, or are threatened with demolition.
Purpose of the Places in Peril Program
Places in Peril seeks to gather local and statewide support to raise awareness of these sites, propel their preservation, and assure their stories are told for years to come.
The program has helped save many important landmarks that may otherwise have been lost.

Sites on the 2025 Places in Peril listing include:
-
Ariton Universalist Church, Dale County
-
Burnt Corn Bethany Baptist Church, Conecuh County
-

-

The Places in Peril list is published on the Alabama Historical Commission’s website and is featured in the Spring 2026 issue of Alabama Heritage.
Statement from AHC Leadership
“For over 30 years, the Alabama Historical Commission’s Places in Peril program has highlighted Alabama’s most at-risk historic properties.
Recognizing a site is our way of emphasizing its importance and encouraging the preservation efforts needed to ensure its future,” said Lisa D. Jones, Executive Director, Alabama Historical Commission and State Historic Preservation Officer.
2026 Nomination Period
Nominations for Places in Peril are accepted on an annual basis from May through October.
The 2026 nomination period will be announced in May to coincide with National Historic Preservation Month, a nationwide movement to celebrate and promote historic places and heritage tourism. Nominations will close on October 31, 2026.

Continued Partnership with Alabama Heritage
AHC is pleased to continue its partnership with Alabama Heritage to publish Alabama’s Places in Peril listing, reaching a key constituency in the state.
Alabama Heritage stated:
“Each year, Alabama Heritage is honored to publish the Alabama Historical Commission’s (AHC) ‘Places in Peril’ article. Saving historically significant sites is a goal we share, and the annual feature and photographs in our spring issue allow us a special opportunity to work together and alert the public to endangered landmarks and sites.
Readers seeing a building or a landmark along with its accompanying story brings history to life at a time when we need to protect it the most. Our state is fortunate to have the dedicated people at the AHC to help all of us preserve our stories.”
