New area code will mean ten-digit dialing for 334 area on Feb. 23

A new 483 area code will go into service on Sunday, Feb. 23, as an overlay to Alabama’s existing 334 area code region, according to the Alabama Public Service Commission.

State regulators say the additional code is needed because phone numbers in the 334 area are on track to run out by the third quarter of 2026. The 334 area code covers most of Hale County and all of Perry County, along with Selma, Montgomery, Prattville, Pike Road, Tuskegee, Auburn, Opelika, Phenix City, Eufaula, Dothan, Enterprise, Troy, Greenville, and a wide stretch of central and southeast Alabama.

The 483 overlay follows a recent transition to mandatory 10-digit dialing in the 334 region, which required customers to begin dialing the area code plus the seven-digit number for all local calls. That change was intended to prepare residents and businesses for the arrival of the new code.

Existing 334 customers will keep their current numbers. Only new customers, or existing customers who request an additional line after implementation, may be assigned numbers with the 483 area code. Officials emphasized that the overlay will not affect current service or rates.

Emergency and other three-digit services, such as 911, will continue to work as they do now and will not require 10-digit dialing.

The Public Service Commission approved the 483 overlay in March 2024 as part of its effort to keep a steady supply of phone numbers available for the region.
