Greensboro City Council was unable to form a consensus regarding proposed repairs at Lions Park during the last City Council meeting of the year on Tuesday, December 10th.
The park’s gate and fencing were damaged in storms throughout the year and are in need of repair. Councilmember Curtis made a motion to pay $809 for the rental of a commercial lift that would be used in fence repairs. Councilmember Shepherd seconded the motion; Councilmember Kyser voted against.
Councilmember Curtis then made a motion to pay a contractor $3,850 to repair the gate at Lions Park. Councilmember Lewis seconded the motion; Councilmember Kyser again voted against. Neither motion carried.
Lovetta Long, pastor of the New Pentecostal Church of Greensboro, spoke during the meeting on her view of the City’s need for a hotel. Long said her church holds events year-round that bring visitors from outside the city and the state. Those visitors, she said, must seek accommodations outside Greensboro, usually in Marion or Selma.
Long offered a five-acre parcel of land belonging to herself and her family to the city for the location of a hotel. The parcel of land is within the city limits, and Long said she would be open to selling or leasing it to the city.
