UPDATE: State investigating officer-involved shooting at Alabama school, suspect identified

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating an officer-involvement shooting at an elementary school that occurred in Etowah County on Thursday, June 9. Officers have identified the suspect in the case as 32 year-old Robert Tyler White of Bunnlevel, N.C.
According to a press release from ALEA, an individual was trying to gain access to a Rainbow City police car parked near Walnut Park Elementary School in Gadsden.
A Rainbow City School Resource Officer reportedly tried to stop the person, who resisted and attempted to take the officer’s gun. Officers from Gadsden Police Department arrived on the scene to provide backup.
The officers fired on the suspect, who was then pronounced dead on the scene. Gadsden Police Department reportedly requested ALEA to investigate the incident. ALEA said its report, once complete, would be turned over to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Department.
ALEA said no further information was available on the incident, and that it remained the subject of an ongoing investigation.
