Council plans hearing on Main Street truck traffic, re-sets April meeting

Greensboro City Council members, during their March 24 meeting, set a public meeting date to consider a petition to restrict heavy truck traffic on west Main Street.

The petition was brought before the Council by Stephen Barnette Jr., a resident of west Main Street.

“We’ve got dump trucks, gravel trucks, log trucks, every kind of truck using the street as a thoroughfare all day and all night,” said Barnette Jr. “All this traffic is tearing up the water lines under the street and filling the road with potholes.”

Barnette said the constant heavy truck traffic is a safety concern due to the street’s proximity to Greensboro Elementary School. He said the traffic resulted in noise pollution for the residents, business owners, and employees on the street.

Barnette did not say how many had signed the petition to limit the street’s traffic, but did note that Greensboro Police Chief Willie Lewis and Hale County EMA Director Russell Weeden had both signed it.

Councilmember Ashley Kyser made a motion to hold a public hearing concerning the traffic and petition on April 14th at 6 PM, prior to the scheduled City Council meeting. Councilmember Bobbie Curtis seconded the motion. The motion carried by voice vote, with one abstention from Councilmember KaTerriaeial Lewis.

Curtis made a motion to provide $500 for a charter bus to take passengers to Bryant Conference Center in Tuscaloosa for Senior Appreciation Day events taking place there from 9 AM to 1 PM on May 8th. Lewis seconded the motion, and it was unanimously carried.

Councilmember Mary Bragg made a motion to change the date of the scheduled April 28 City Council meeting to Monday, April 27, due to a conflict with the annual Alabama League of Municipalities Convention on the 28th. Councilmember Pearl Shepherd seconded the motion, which carried by unanimous voice vote.

Kyser made a motion to allow the closure of Church Street on April 4 from 9 AM to 4 PM to accommodate St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s annual Easter egg hunt. Lewis seconded the motion, and it was unanimously carried.

Jovita Lewis, Director of the Hale County Extension Office, asked the Council for a street closure on Whelan Street to accommodate the group’s 2nd annual Move Alabama Initiative. Kyser made the motion, Shepherd seconded, and it carried by unanimous voice vote.

Mayor Ralph Howard said progress is being made on the city storm shelter.
