The Office of Governor Kay Ivey announced on December 29 the awarding of $2.7 million to aid in the fight against homelessness. This official act will help those without a home or at risk of becoming homeless.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) will administer the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The funds are from the Emergency Solutions Grant program and will assist local governments and nonprofit agencies for the purpose of providing housing and other related services to homeless people or people facing homelessness.
Gov. Ivey stated, “People become homeless for a number of reasons and often it is because of circumstances beyond their control.”
“ADECA is pleased to join with Gov. Ivey and local governments and agencies in providing a helping hand to ensure Alabamians have a roof over their heads,” stated ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell.
Among those awarded grants include the City of Tuscaloosa — $220,000, the Shelby County Commission — $179,864, and United Way of East Central Alabama — $400,000.
