Suspected Alabama church shooter had Title 1 gun dealer license

Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr announced capital murder charges against 70-year-old Robert Findlay Smith of Birmingham for capital murder during shooting at a church Thursday.
All three victims have died of injuries they sustained in the mass shooting. They are Walter “Bart” Rainey, 84, of Irondale, Sarah Yeager, 75, of Pelham, and Jane Pounds, 84, of Hoover.
Smith was taken into custody at around 3:30 p.m. on the Friday following the shooting.
Records online say Smith holds a Title 1 dealer or gunsmith license in Alabama. His license number is reportedly 1-63-073-01-6A-02266. Title 1 firearms include rifles, pistols, shotguns, and revolvers.
Smith was arrested in 2007 on the campus of Samford University and charged with impersonating a police officer and illegally carrying a firearm on campus. He sued the university and the arresting officer, and won a $29,000 wrongful arrest jury verdict the following year.
