The Alabama Beacon was founded in 1840 in Greensboro, Greene County, Alabama. At that time, west Alabama was one of the fastest-growing and most-influential parts of the state. The Beacon was founded to reflect that: not just a local publication, but one covering all of Alabama.
By 1912, Greensboro was in Hale County, the Beacon had become a strictly local newspaper, and advances in travel and communication had begun to change the country and state at a dramatic pace. That year, the operations and archives of the Beacon, and even the editor at the time, were subsumed into the operations of the Greensboro Watchman, its one-time competitor in Hale County.
In 2022, as new technology again offers new opportunities, the publisher and staff of the Greensboro Watchman re-introduce the Alabama Beacon. As people who love local news, the state of Alabama, and, more than anything, a good story, we often find Alabama people, places, and events we’d like to cover in a longer, non-newspaper format, and in one that’s oriented toward all the people of Alabama, no matter where they live.
The Beacon will be the online home of that work, highlighting what’s new, what’s unique, what’s essential, and what’s so special about Alabama—from the Appalachian foothills to the Gulf Coast, and from the Black Belt to the Wiregrass.
