“This makes us feel at home and knowing that we as a people can get together and have a good time. We didn’t have to drive all the way to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras. We’re enjoying it right here in Bessemer!” — Ms. Sheila Williams, at the 1st Annual Silver Boomers Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball
With soulful renditions of soul & blues music classics such as “Happy Feelings” and “Down Home Blues” from Mrs. Johnny & the Jammers, along with sounds spun by DJ Collins, the Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball was a great festive experience for many Bessemer residents.
With catered foods provided by Bistro on 19th, many enjoyed the tastes while sharing laughter and the camaraderie the event presented.
In congruence with the city of Bessemer, city officials and others joined in the fun.
“I think they beat Mobile this year, and I look forward to returning again,” said another event visitor, Ms. Rhoynda C. Bender.
“I want to congratulate the Silver Boomers, Ms. Makeda Smith and all of our sponsors and all those who’ve come out to enjoy. We know it’s Mardi Gras season, and for those unable to go to New Orleans or Mobile we thought it’d be nice to be able to socialize and enjoy one another right here in Bessemer,” Mayor Kenneth Gulley told us.
Also on hand was Lasharn Hart of Capture This 360, who shared: “We wanted to help elevate this event with our services by providing photo services, and it’s all about good energy and good vibes. It’s amazing to be back and to serve and be a part of this wonderful group of people.”
Held at Bessemer’s Civic Center, the 1st Annual Silver Boomers Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball was nothing short of fun, surprises, and line dancing. The décor made it seem as though all present were part of the New Orleans big bands and parading down Mobile streets.
Kenneth E. Gulley Rec Center Director, Ms. Makeda Smith, also celebrated senior visitors who were marking 80 plus years of gratefulness. She mentioned the Blue Zone, a program set to ensure healthy living for many to live long lives.
Commissioner Sheila Tyson was also present, sharing an encouraging message to the Silver Boomers. Bessemer Chamber of Commerce President LaTasha Cook-Williams was visible as well, offering a cheerful and welcoming presence to all.
We celebrate the Silver Boomers and the grand efforts of our city officials and recreation center staff for showing us there’s no Mardi Gras party like the Marvel City’s.
